A journey from Michoacán

to California in pursuit

of their dreams

At the core of Moteado lies a story as enchanting as the fluttering wings of the monarch butterfly. It is a tale that resonates with the spirit of Marisol, the visionary behind our mezcal brand. Born from her deep-rooted connection to her heritage and the journey we all embark upon in life, Moteado (or spotted in English) pays homage to the remarkable 3,000-mile odyssey of the monarch butterfly—a journey reminiscent of Marisol’s own family’s migration from Michoacán to California in pursuit of their dreams.

Our story begins with Marisol’s childhood, spending summers immersed in the vibrant landscapes of Michoacán. Every departure from her beloved homeland was met with tears, an emotional testament to the enduring bond she felt. Fueled by a profound frustration over the scarcity of Michoacán mezcal in the United States—where only a mere 2% of the region’s mezcal found its way—Marisol resolved to be the catalyst for change to cast a spotlight upon her ancestral home.

Michoacán, a region blessed with an extraordinary terroir shaped by its unique climate, soil, and volcanic terrain, is renowned for its agricultural prowess. It proudly stands as the world’s leading exporter of avocados and blackberries, thanks to the volcanic soil nourished by the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and the abundant rainfall that graces the land. It is within this remarkable backdrop that Moteado finds its essence.
